Where It all Began

An Idea, A Gamble, and a few pairs of shorts

Hexby started with no grand plan—just an idea and a bit of curiosity. Blue and Sally, both from farming backgrounds, worked full-time—Sally in law and Blue as a Chartered Surveyor—but they’d always had the drive to build something of their own. During COVID lockdowns, with more time at home, Blue started thinking about ways to make that happen. While travelling in New Zealand in 2019, he had seen how popular colourful shorts were among farmers and the Kiwi population in general. It got him thinking—maybe they’d work back home, too. So in 2021, they took what felt like a big gamble at the time—got 50 pairs made, figured out how to build an online store, and launched Hexby, not knowing where it would take them.

From a side hustle to a brand

Hard Work, late nights and a growing brand

What started as a small side project quickly became something much bigger. Stock kept selling out, queues formed at shows, and Hexby became more than just a business—it became a brand that people genuinely connected with. In the early years, Blue and Sally juggled full-time jobs while pouring every spare hour into Hexby, packing orders late into the night and spending every weekend growing the business. What started as a few boxes in the spare room soon spread to every room, then into farm buildings—until finally, they moved into a proper warehouse. Now stocked in stores across the UK, seen at major agricultural shows, and shipping to customers all over the world, Hexby has grown beyond what they ever imagined. But one thing’s for sure—there’s still plenty more to come.

a name shaped by life

The story behind the Name & logo

With the idea for the shorts in place, all that was missing was a name and a logo. Sitting on the sofa at home, Blue knew he wanted the brand to take inspiration from where he lived—Hexton’s—so the first part of the name had to be Hex. But finding the right ending proved trickier. After running through countless ideas, he stopped to think about what the brand represented. Coming from a farming background and having played rugby since the age of ten, he wanted a name that tied both worlds together. That’s when he looked at the word rugby—taking the last two letters to make Hexby , and instantly, it felt right. From there, the logo needed to reflect the same rugby and farming ethos. Blue sketched ideas by hand, shaping the letter H to resemble rugby posts. To reinforce the farming connection, he added ears of wheat to the uprights, forming what is now the iconic Hexby logo. It was a simple but meaningful design—one that represents where the brand started and the values it stands for.
